eSIM is the Future and Will Replace Your Normal SIM Card Soon

In the future, you may not need a physical SIM card anymore in order to use your mobile phone as a result of the introduction of eSIM. But what is an eSIM?

eSIM
An eSIM is a smaller embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card measuring just 5mm in length and 5mm in width soldered into a device motherboard with all the functions of a regular SIM card. In other word, the eSIM/Embedded SIM is a very much smaller version of the removable SIM found in your phone.

But what is the intention or purpose of introducing this eSIM? Well, it's obvious phone manufacturers want to do away with the space occupied by a removable SIM card. For a SIM to work, there will be a SIM socket for holding it and the circuit which connects it to the motherboard and other necessary parts of the phone or mobile device but with an eSIM, this is minimized adequately and manufacturers can have the luxury of making less bulky phones with more beautiful designs.

This was the same reason, phone makers adopted the use of nano SIM and mini SIM cards years ago but it looks like that is not even enough now. The same reason why we now have phones with non-removable batteries. All this technology is to make phone less bulky and appealing to the eyes.

HOW IT WORKS

It has M2M (Machine to Machine) and Remote Provisioning capabilities which provide you with an enhanced customer experience when activating and managing our phones. When you buy a phone with this eSIM in it, you can activate your preferred operator by going to phones settings, then select your network and what plan you want and you will be connected.

Interestingly, the new smartphones from Google - the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 comes with eSIM though Google rightly included slot for removable SIM as well because it's not yet rampant but expect to see it replacing the normal SIM card in nearest future.

At this years Mobile World Congress, in the GSMA Seminar, Thomas Henze, Program Director eSIM, Product Innovation, Deutsche Telekom demonstrated activating his phone via scanning a code that in his demonstration was part of a physical letter from an operator. In another demo, a scenario was played out where via a Universal Activation Code, again used by scanning, we could activate as many phones as we wanted.

In the Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL the eSIM is currently only used by Google Project Fi and thus it has a physical Nano-SIM card tray for all the other operators. ref.

    1. Nice observation. Of course, more information on that will be disclosed as time goes on. This is just a tips of the iceberg.

More reason why Google added slot for physical SIM even after embedding eSIM on the new Pixel smartphones.

That shows, it will still take some time before its rampant. More information coming soon.

  6. It is logical evolution. Nowadays phones has everything integrated and sealed, without any user replaceable parts, so no wonder in a future your phone will be embedded with all the hardware and software you need, saving space and make it easier to design

  9. Here’s why it will be better: You wouldn’t be needing multiple devices anymore, you wouldn’t have to swap SIMS anymore when you travel, you can easily connect and sync with other smart gadgets such as smart watches and tv’s. Also the embedded eSIM will mean doing away with the traditional sim slots. Creating more space for manufacturers and ultimately bringing about better compact designs for mobile devices.

  10. But wizy I hope it wont be counter productive....
Cos sim sales(from sim replacement) would collapse. That means telco workers wont meet their sim target. Not meeting target in d long run, a sack beckons? I mean when it is finally adopted in our country

  14. The eSIM gives us an improved and more secure customer experience, better designed devices, opens up new market opportunities for operators and enables entire new categories of connected devices.

    ReplyDelete
  15. An additional consumer benefit that we've heard discussed is that the eSIM should ensure future devices are cheaper to manufacture. Passing the cost saving to consumers, of course is a whole different story and it may not happen at all.

  16. Wearables are only one category that benefits from an eSIM. Automotive makers, with the inclusion of an eSIM allows us to quickly connect our cars to cellular.

  17. Laptops will benefit from the inclusion of the eSIM while providing brands and re-sellers the opportunity to up-sell/cross-sell through the use of flexible data bundles.

  21. Apple and Samsung have been in talks with major network providers to adopt electronic SIM cards for future smartphones. Samsung used the GSMA enabled eSIM on its Gear S2 Classic 3G, but now Apple has also turned to eSIM to add connectivity to the Apple Watch Series 3, announced on 12 September 2017.

  22. The use of eSIM brings a number of advantages to device manufacturers, but there's also some advantages for the user too.
But what exactly is an eSIM? And what exactly will it offer if your next device supports it?.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The term "eSIM" relates to a new standard being promoted by the GSMA - the association that represents network operators worldwide.
It will come in the form of an integrated SIM chip, one that cannot and need not be removed from a device - something that consumer electronics manufacturers are also keen to adopt for connected items around the house as part of the Internet of Things, and something that's been used by some car manufacturers too.

  24. With the announcement of the Apple Watch 3, Apple confirmed that the new connected version of the watch will be using an eSIM. It will be on the same number as your iPhone, so there will be a seamless experience across the two devices. For the Apple Watch 3, that means you can use messaging services, place calls, use mapping or stream music without your phone.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The important thing about eSIM, however, is that it needs to be supported by the network or carrier, meaning the Apple Watch 3 will exclusive to some carriers in some countries. For the UK, that network is EE.

  26. The phone companies want to have a relationship with you. They want you to think of them as much as possible and by more product from them. The eSIM will reduce your relationship with your phone company. You won’t visit their stores or websites as often because you’ll be able to connect to them through settings on your phone.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The only advantage that we could think about physical cards against theadvantages of eSIM cardsis the possibility of changing phones real quickly. However, this is something that eSIM might do better; we will only have to wait until the specifications are released.
If eSIM cards work with something like a password and login information, it might be just as easy to change phones while remaining with the same number. This is something we can only speculate, as eSIM cards might also be already installed in the specific phone storage (something we really hope doesn’t happen!).

  28. though. Some believe we’ll one day seem them used in all phones.
