Getting Out: Preparing to Leave an Abusive Partner and File for Divorce

 Divorce can be messy and complicated, but it’s especially difficult when you’re in an abusive situation. That’s why it’s so important to have a plan of action as you prepare to leave the marriage.

Before anything else, contact a local family law attorney where you live and explain the situation to them. Be as transparent as possible in your conversations so they can best understand and advise you on what to do next. An attorney will also be your guide in handling any fallout from the divorce. If you don’t already have an attorney in mind, ask for a referral from someone you trust or check with your local bar association’s attorney directory. If you don’t qualify for legal assistance or can’t afford a lawyer, you may have to seek financial aid from loved ones or find an attorney who is willing to work with you on an installment plan.

Every situation is different. If you and your partner are still living together and they are physically violent towards you (or you feel threatened in some way) then don’t wait to see what happens. Even if they are saying they’ll agree to everything and sign papers for an uncontested divorce, don’t stay in a dangerous home. Get out. Stay with family or friends or, if finances aren’t an issue, get a second apartment for the duration of the divorce proceedings.

Alternatively, you can contact a local domestic violence shelter for help. Staff from the shelter can assess your situation and provide you with domestic violence counseling. They may also have resources to support you during this trying time, such as temporary housing or a court escort. Make sure you contact your lawyer as soon as you decide to leave so they can counsel you on the next steps.

Pack the essentials before you leave. This includes, but is not limited to, important documents (identification cards, social security cards, health insurance, and credit and debit cards) and clothing. Try to get everything you’ll need so there’s no reason for you to return to your spouse. If you get a new place of your own during the divorce, keep your address hidden from your partner and have any mail forwarded to a post office box. If harassment is a problem you can change your number, get a prepaid cell phone, and install a security system.

Once you’re out of the house, go to court and file for a restraining order against your partner. A restraining order can keep your partner from harassing you throughout the divorce proceedings. Your attorney can help you with this or you can do it on your own.

If you own your home and your spouse won’t leave, a restraining order will also force them out. Before you take this route, and if you feel it is safe to do so, speak to your partner and request that they leave. You can also request an emergency order from the court to give you exclusive occupancy of the home during the divorce proceedings.

Unless your attorney advises you otherwise, you should not have any direct interaction with an abusive partner once you’ve decided to file for divorce and left the shared residence. If contact is unavoidable, ask a friend or family member to come with you. Not only can they lend you support when facing your spouse, but they can also act as a witness if your partner lashes out in any way. Whatever else, never confront your spouse alone.

In contested divorce cases, your partner may try to drag out the case. They may refuse to sign the papers if you are trying to do a cheap divorce by having them sign an agreement before filing the divorce or they could just disagree on something trivial and refuse to compromise. If this occurs, consult your attorney. With his or her help, you may need to file a complaint, which will include the grounds for the divorce. In Alabama, state law recognizes violence as a valid reason for divorce.

Once you’ve filed the complaint, your partner will have the chance to answer it and any allegations made within. If there is still no agreement between the two parties, the case could go to trial. This is where any witnesses, verbal testimonies and other evidence (photographs of injuries, written journal, etc.) you may have come into play. The court will consider such evidence when making a final verdict on the case.

Ultimately, divorce can be exhausting, tedious, and frustrating, but don’t give up. Gather strength from those who care about you and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. One of the hardest things in getting out of an abusive marriage is trying to do it alone. Be open with your loved ones and honest with yourself about what’s right for you. Remember, you have every right to protect yourself and leave an abusive partner

Owerri: This Keke Man Picked And Returned Recharge Cards Worth N80,000 - Gets Rewarded

Who says there are no good Nigerians? Who says all Nigerians are corrupt? Who says he joined robbery and trafficking because of hardship? Here is a very good and gentle Nigerian Keke Napep operator who found a purse containing recharge card worth N80k and returned it to Zanders FM which is one of the radio stations in Imo State. Below is the report from Zanders FM.

"His name is Mr Akpan Nsikak from Cross River State (calabar), he is a keke operatoroperator in Owerri.

About a week ago, he found a purse containing recharge cards of all the network providers in Nigeria worth about N80,000 forgotten by a passenger in his keke.

He brought it to zanders 105.7fm studio and we announced it (not mentioning the content of the purse). Few days later and elderly woman came, identified and claimed the purse and it's content.

Now here is the big deal about this whole story: Mr Akpan Nsikak owns a rickety keke that needs major repairs. Whit that amount of money, he would have fixed his keke, and had some extra money to flex around with.

But he chose to return it to the owner.

The C. E. O of zanders 105.7fm Owerri and zanders foundation decided to honour Mr. Akpan Nsikak today.

Mr Akpan Nsikak got a cash gift of N10,000 a one year house (self contained) rent in Owerri town. (as he lives at akabo) at the moment. He also got an electronic Kettle from the Noble Women Association, his decapitated keke was fixed.


He will also have a night (all expenses paid for) at the prestigious New Concorde Hotel Owerri)."

Almost all of us are guilty of operating our phones at night as it is sometimes inevitable because that is the period a large percentage of phone users have free time to check on their phone, browse the internet and chat with friends.

According to Omar Mahroo, who is an ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital; he carried out an experiment. In his experiment, he went in a dark room and with one eye closed, he stared at his smartphone for 20 minutes before switching off the screen. “It did actually feel quite strange,” he says of his self-experiment. “It would be very alarming if you didn’t know what was going on.”

After that, he connected himself to a device that measured current flowing in the photoreceptors in his retinas using electrodes. Then, after flashes of dim light, the particular retina that was exposed exposed to the screen took longer to adjust to new light settings.

This simply shows that one can temporarily go blind by gazing at phone screen in dark areas especially when one eye is used instead of two eyes👀

A camera phone is simply a mobile phone which has the ability to capture photographs. In recent times, camera phones can as well record videos and used for video chats and calls. The first camera phone was sold in 2000 in Japan, and the name is the J-Phone model, although some argue that the SCH-V200 and Kyocera VP-210 Visual Phone, both introduced months earlier, are the first camera phones.

1. Language translating
Sometimes you might find yourself in a foreign land or you just came across a foreign language flummoxed by a sign, menu or other piece of text. Don't worry as your phone camera can do the wonders with Google Translate (Android, iOS app) and you can get an instant translation through your camera. 
Google Translate can utilize optical character recognition (OCR) to automatically interpret the text and translate it for you. it’s not perfect, but it can work surprisingly well and is faster than using the popular google word translate by typing. 
From the front page of the google translate app, just tap on the camera icon and begin your search. 
You don’t get access to as many languages as the text part of the app does (29 vs 103) but it’s still super handy to have, and you can load up a previously snapped picture too. Other apps that works in similar ways are TextGrabber + Translator (Android,iOS) and WayGo (Android, iOS). 

2. Document Scanning
This one is one the important features i have been using with my camera phones for a very long time now. You can scan your documents and send to the cloud or to any email without the need of visiting a cyber cafe or using a traditional scanner hardware. This comes in handy whenever you want to scan something and send somewhere from any location you might find yourself. 
The scanned documents can be converted into editable text. Examples of apps that can perform this scanning tricks are Evernote’s Scannable (iOS) is a decent option and Google Drive also has the same scanning functionality (though only in the Android app right now). CamScanner (Android, iOS) and Scanbot (iOS) are two more excellent options to consider for this important task.

3. Star Gazing

In the tech world, there is what we call "augumented reality" and it means a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world, thus providing a composite view.
Star gazing is one of the applications of augmented reality (or mixed reality). With apps like "SkyView (Android, iOS)", point your phone camera up at the sky, and you can pick out stars, constellations and more without the aid of a telescope.
Other similar star gazing apps are available, and as we’ve said, there are plenty more AR apps ready to overlay information on top of the ‘feed’ coming from your phone’s camera: take a look at Wikitude (Android, iOS) or Blippar (Android, iOS) for example.

4. Visual Search
Do you know you can search google with pictures instead of typing text? It's fun and at the same time educative. Many search apps allow you to "snap a picture" from your camera and use it to perform a search. For instance, if you snapped a photo of a product like a Laptop or smartphone, you would see available information about the product with the image search. Also if you snapped a photo of a tourist attraction, you’d  as well see information about the attraction center, where it is located and lots more. Example of the visual search app in Android is the Google Goggles  which offers an official Google visual search experience.

I knew about this feature just last year and since then, it has been fun and educative at the same time. Another trend and technological revolution in the gaming world is gradually diverting to the use of Augumented reality to play games via phone camera. One of the most downloaded augmented reality games is Droid Shooting. Turn any real-life boring background into a real life shooting fest as you deal with waves upon waves of droids that will come and attack you. Droid Shooting utilizes your phone’s camera and makes it a viewfinder or HUD (Heads-up-display) for the battlefield. You will also find a radar at your disposal, so you’ll always know where those vicious droids plan to attack.

This art work definitely beats the Monalisa paintings and the Yabatech graduate by name Oresegun Olumide who was born in 1981 has written his name in the book of great Nigerian painters already. I saw his works and decided to share it with you here.
