MultiChoice, the parent company of DSTV and GOtv is considering Introducing DStv Pay-As-You-Consume Payment Option in Nigeria as one of its latest business model in the country which happens to be its largest market. Once it's available, subscribers will be charged according to their consumption. It is similar to Pay as You Go service offered by network providers.
According to the managing director of Multichoice Nigeria – John Ugbe while speaking on the side-lines of the ongoing Digital Dialogue in Dubai, United Arab Emirates said;
“Pay-as-you-consume is something we may consider, if it is technologically possible and the business model supports it, we will”
He also added that the company currently allows subscribers to suspend their subscriptions twice a year in case they are not of Africa.
Recall that new rival, TStv has this feature as well so I believe MultiChoice want to neutralize it and eliminate any thing that could make customers consider another option.
MultiChoice is bringing a Netflix-like service which is a standalone DSTV video streaming app that will offer various videos cutting across different categories that will be accessible after subscription.
The new service will be delivered with broadband connections and not via direct-to-home satellite with a satellite subscription.
Mark Rayner, CEO of MultiChoice South Africa, had earlier said in 2017 that
“A standalone streaming version of DStv is definitely coming in the future. The idea of launching a standalone streaming version is something MultiChoice spends considerable time discussing internally. There are no concrete plans to launch on a specific date though”.
A significant stride towards offering a streaming-only package has been taken, but there are obstacles to overcome.
their biggest obstacle was not sports broadcasting rights, but securing the streaming rights for all the entertainment content they offer on their existing packages.
MultiChoice was able to secure the last of these rights in 2018, making it possible for DStv Now to offer live streaming of every channel included in the DStv Premium package.
THE FUTURE OF DSTV
The CEO said that the future is in online streaming and on-demand video. Despite the facts that MultiChoice lost over 100,000 DSt v Premium subscribers during the last financial year; while Netflix on the other hand added 7.41 million subscribers during its last quarter – growing to 125million subscribers globally.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF NOLLYWOOD
Nollywood is still the world third most popular movie industry after Hollywood and Bollywood. Stats shows that over 100 movies are produced each month in Nigeria in English, Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo languages.
Nollywood movies are not only liked and watched by Nigerians but all over the world hence we have many TV channels dedicated to showcasing Nollywood movies such as African Magic, IrokoTv, Iroking, AMC, etc.
Nollywood has produced so many stars who are now household name in Nigeria and diaspora because of the popularity of the industry. It's really a big industry in Nigeria and a great platform for entertainment.
MultiChoice has been on the news since the beginning of February simply because of the potential shutdown of its PayTv services - DSTV and GOtv as a result of their operational license expiring in June, 2019.
Reports has it that the license which was issued back in 2014 won't be renewed because it's not in line with the Digital Switch Over (DSO) White Paper.
Meanwhile, MultiChoice has finally reacted to the report and says that it complies with the regulatory requirements and applicable laws on TV broadcasting. Below is an excerpt of the statement.
“GOtv is provided under a fully licenced and registered entity in Nigeria, and this license comes up for renewal in March 2019" the statement reads.
"As a law-abiding and committed Nigerian operator which has fulfilled (and continues to comply with) all regulatory requirements and applicable laws, it is not clear how or why this license would not be renewed, and as such the company will investigate further in the best interests of the many customers it serves in the market" it further says.
The statement adds that "MultiChoice remains committed to providing its customers with a wide variety of quality entertainment through the usual best standards."
Recall MultiChoice launched in Nigeria in 1994. In 1995 it launched DSTV (Digital Satellite Television), a direct broadcast satellite service for the Sub-Saharan African market.
In 2011 MultiChoice launched the pocket friendly PayTv version called GOtv digital platform, a pay television offering on digital terrestrial television (DTT) at cheap cost.
Since then, the company has become a household name in Nigeria.
For the past few days, most of you may have heard the news of MultiChoice which is the parent company owners of both DSTV and GOtv pay-tv networks shutting down operations in Nigeria by June 2019
But what actually is the reason for this in unfortunate news?
Well, it's reported that the Federal Government notified the management of MultiChoice DSTV/GOTV that their operations, in Nigeria, will come to an end in 2019.
According to the government, the operational license of MultiChoice expires June next year (2019). This will affect all DSTV and GOtv services if they didn't fix this.
However, from a letter issued on Tuesday to that effect, by the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation(NBC), the license issued to them in 2014 by NBC will not be renewed because it was not in line with Digital Switch Over (DSO) White Paper.
Meanwhile, for Multichoice (DSTV/GOTV) to operate again in Nigeria after expiration of its license, there is just one option which is to go to licensed Signal Distribution company, that is Pinnacle Communications Ltd or ITS.
But in another development, GOTV has been accused of being used as a medium to siphon foreign exchange from Nigeria by its parent company, South African Multi Choice DSTV.
While this news may tremble some DSTV and GOtv users who are addicted to their services, I will like to give you a lifeline. I don't actually see MultiChoice Leaving Nigeria. They will always find a way to settle issues with FG to continue operation as Nigeria is a big market for the company.

MultiChoice partners Telkom to introduce free internet based subscription model on DSTV which gives subscribers 30GB worth of data preloaded in a Mifi router. As you can see, the fear of TStv is the beginning of wisdom. Ever since TStv started trending with their mind blowing offers, other pay TV networks has being revisiting their plans and adding new offers. TStv is the first Pay TV network in Nigeria to introduce Internet-based pricing model and it's expected to fully go into commercial sale in November 1, 2017. The masses has accepted them with both hands and are eagerly anticipating get have the decoder in their houses as we can see from comments online.
The threats posed by TStv has caused panic for other competitors as GOtv introduced GOtv Max, Startimes introduced daily and weekly subscription models while Kwesé TV launched with pay per view subscription modes within the period under consideration. This is exactly what makes market interesting. Competition is in the Satellite 📡 TV business is what we have craved for many years and now, it's becoming a reality.
Having said this, Africa’s leading pay-tv provider, MultiChoice thought it wise to introduce free internet based subscription model to the market, hence partnered with Telkom to offer a combined entertainment and Internet service to subscribers at an affordable cost.
In reference to the advert dubbed 'DSTV Na Net', customers purchasing a full DSTV HD decoder will get a free Mifi-router preloaded with 30GB Data from Telkom. This data can be used via WiFi Tethering so you can even connect your mobile devices like phones or your laptop.
According to M.D MultiChoice Kenya,
“We understand that Internet has become a basic necessity for doing business and interacting with other people socially. That is why this partnership with Telkom is an important step towards improving our customer experience.”
AVAILABILITY OF THIS OFFER
For now, this service is only available in Kenya but it will hopefully get to other African country soon especially Nigeria where MultiChoice has big market presence. via
This post is about the new subscription model from MultiChoice called DSTV/Gotv Pay-Per-View (PPV) Model. Here you will get all the information you need to know about this new subscription and how to go about it.
Multichoice Nigeria has announced it would be launching the pay-per-view (PPV) subscription model in the country.
The company says this would allow subscribers watch some important programmes not available on their bouquet. Though, at an extra cost to the willing consumers.
According to a report by Telecompaper, the Head of Public Relations of Multichoice, Caroline Oghuma states that this concept is different from pay-as-you-go, which has been misconstrued to mean pay-per-view.
“Pay TV operation is not like the telecom version where you pay for the amount of airtime you want to use. Pay-as-you-go, as believed by some customers, is not obtainable in the pay TV business,” said Oghuma.
Oghuma also points out that the PPV model is a global practice which allows interested parties pay and view special programmes or events.
“Paying for PPV in Europe and the UK is equivalent to paying for two months subscription in Nigeria. We know Africans love boxing that is why we are bringing the best thing that is happening in the world to Africa.”
Many subscribers of Multichoice Nigeria's pay-TV service are currently having issues with the company on its fixed subscription regime.
Some of the company’s pay-TV subscribers state that Multichoice should extend the pricing model to over all its bouquets. Consumers say the current pricing regime is unfair and waste of resource as they usually don’t get the value for their money.
“Having a pay-per-view could be a good alternative, as to me the current subscription regime is a cheat on me. Initially, I used to do the full bouquet like N13000 ($42.5) and then I just thought I was wasting money and reduced it to around N3000 ($9.8). What I really watch on the DStv is the E!,” said Ms. Olamide, a DStv subscriber.
Another Explorer subscriber of the DStv pay-TV states that: “The current regime is a reap-off on subscribers as we should only pay for what we consume.”
“I feel the PPV thing should work. I suggest this should be based on option as there many channels and for the explorer package where they record some of the best movies for you to watch. Then, how would do this as it would also affect them.”
This post covers all the list of DSTV SMS codes as well as USSD Commands used for paying for subscription, checking balance, clearing error, checking due date, and confirmation of accounts. In the past, there were no codes for DSTV users and as you will expect, it was much difficult handling even the simplest of issues but Dstv sms service code was introduced to ease things up and help them do more in less time.
DSTV (Digital Satellite Television) is MultiChoice's digital satellite TV service in Sub-Saharan Africa, launched in 1995, providing various bouquets offering general entertainment, movies, lifestyle & culture, sport, documentaries, news & commerce, children, music, religion and consumer channels to MultiChoice subscribers. DStv has around 8 million subscribers,[1] with the majority being in South Africa and Nigeria. These two markets are considered to be the most important markets for DStv, although markets such as Kenya, Ghana, Angola, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Mauritius and Tanzania, though not having as many subscribers, are also a focus point for DStv.
Advancement in technology has made many things more easier including cable TV subscriptions and management. DSTV uses a Smartcard which is more like the ATM that Banks give to you.
Similarly, the DSTV Smartcards have some digits which is unique to them, also like those on your ATM card. These random digits is your "unique identifier" and will help you with most processes involving the use of your DSTV decoder.
1. To check the due date of your Account balance: Type: Due (smartcard number) to 30333. e.g due 4251678290 to 30333 . you will receive a reply like this. Hi (your name) the amount of balance is due on (date of due).
2. Code to check DSTV Account Balance: If you want to check the balance of your recharge on your Smartcard, simply Send balance (smartcard Number) to 30333. e.g Balance 4251678290 to 30333.

3. Last payment processed: Send payment (Smartcard Number) to 30333
4. Clear error codes: From time to time, you may come across some errors and you will be presented with some error codes.
You need to clear those before you can proceed with any operation you are carrying out with your decoder.
To clear these error codes, simply Send reauth (Smartcard number) to 30333
5. Product activated:
Products (smartcard Number) to 30333.
Alternatively, you can download the DSTV Android app known as DSTV Now to perform all of these without sending codes but it will require internet access while the code method doesn't need internet for you to use it.
HOW TO USE THE APP
Using the DSTV app is as simple as using the Text message feature or maybe even simpler.
For example, If you want to use the dstv app to check account balance,
✔ Install dstv application on your phone
✔️ Select “Nigeria" during the set up process
✔️ Sign in with your "smart card number" and phone number

And there are lots of other activities you can perform on this app.
Naspers Limited, parent company of MultiChoice Africa, is having discussions with MTN, South African telecommunications company, regarding the sale of the company.
MultiChoice Africa is the franchise owner of DStv and GOtv. Bloomberg reports that the disposal of MultiChoice Africa will not affect the South African division of the TV network although the plans have not been made public.
“A sale is one of a number of options being considered by Africa’s biggest company by market value, and a final decision hasn’t been reached. Naspers and MTN Group have briefly discussed a deal for MultiChoice Africa, but no agreement was reached.”
A sale of MultiChoice Africa would mean a shift away from its traditional media business, which includes newspapers and MultiChoice’s main product, the DSTV satellite-TV service by Cape Town-based Naspers.
According to the cable, both companies confirmed on Thursday that they are still in talks about sharing TV content, video-on-demand services, on smartphones.
During its November results presentation, Naspers had blamed the weakening currencies and economies in some African countries for its lower dollar revenue as the company charges customers in local currencies.
Customers of DSTV are receiving text messages on Imminent Increase in subscription fee of the MultiChoice cable network owned by South African coy.
DSTV is currently trending on Twitter and the reason is not far-fetched. DSTV subscribers have received a text disclosing a price increase for all its satellite pay TV bouquets in Nigeria as from 1st May, 2017.
See twitter reactions below.
Nigerians have already shown how dissatisfied they are with this, as they alleged that DSTV which is owned by Multichoice, is taking advantage of the monopoly in the market. It is also alleged the company said that for one to lock in his/her old rates, the subscriber has to pay for one year.
What do you think about this? What's your opinion?
